Dental Implant Procedure Edmonds, WA

Most people know dental implants as a tooth replacement option, but far fewer understand what the process actually involves, or why it takes the time it does.

That uncertainty can make patients hesitant, especially when they have no clear picture of what each phase looks like, how long it lasts, or what happens between appointments.

At Distinctive Dentistry we walk you through the entire dental implant process from first consultation through final crown placement, giving you a realistic picture of the road ahead before we ever get started.

The Consultation and Treatment Planning Phase

Every implant case begins long before any surgical work takes place. During your initial consultation, the dentist will perform a full clinical examination along with dental X-rays and, in most cases, a cone beam CT scan.

This three-dimensional imaging gives us a precise picture of your jawbone density, height, and available width. These are all factors that determine whether implant placement can proceed immediately or whether preparatory treatment is needed first.

Our team will also review your full medical history, assess the condition of the surrounding teeth and gum tissue, and discuss the specific teeth being replaced.

By the end of this appointment, you should leave with a clear, step-by-step treatment outline and a realistic timeline for your individual case.

Preparatory Procedures: Not Everyone Needs Them

Some patients can move directly to implant placement after their consultation. Others require one or more preparatory steps first.

These may include:

  • Tooth extraction: if the tooth being replaced is still present and has not yet been removed
  • Bone grafting: if the jaw has lost volume over time and lacks the density to support a stable implant
  • Periodontal treatment: if active gum disease must be fully resolved before surgery can safely proceed

Bone grafting deserves special mention because it is frequently misunderstood. When a tooth has been missing for an extended period, the surrounding bone gradually loses density and volume — a process called resorption.

A graft introduces bone material, which may come from a donor bank, a synthetic source, or in select cases the patient’s own bone, and gives the jaw the structure needed for a stable implant.

Healing after grafting typically requires several months before placement can occur.

Implant Placement Surgery

Once any preparatory work is complete and the site has healed, the next phase is the placement procedure itself. This is performed under local anesthesia, and we offer sedation options for patients who prefer a more relaxed experience.

During the procedure, the dentist will access the bone, carefully prepare the site to precise dimensions, and position the implant — a small titanium post — into the jaw at a calculated angle and depth.

Titanium is the material of choice because of its well-documented ability to bond directly with living bone tissue through a process called osseointegration.

Once placed, the implant is either covered with a healing cap or fitted with a temporary restoration while this bonding occurs.

Most patients find that the procedure is considerably less uncomfortable than they expected. Mild soreness in the days following surgery is common, and most people return to their normal routines within two to three days.

Osseointegration: The Phase That Cannot Be Rushed

Osseointegration is the biological process by which the bone grows around and fuses with the implant. This is what distinguishes dental implants from every other form of tooth replacement. It is also what gives them their exceptional stability.

Depending on the patient’s bone quality, health status, and individual healing response, this phase typically spans three to six months.

During this period, our team will schedule periodic check-in appointments to monitor healing and confirm that the implant is integrating properly.

It is critical not to accelerate this phase. Placing a crown on an implant before osseointegration is complete puts the entire restoration at risk.

Patients who smoke or have conditions that affect healing, such as uncontrolled diabetes, may experience a longer or less predictable timeline, which we will address during the planning phase.

Abutment Placement and Crown Fabrication

Once osseointegration is confirmed, the abutment is placed. This small connector component attaches to the top of the implant and forms the structural base for the crown above it.

Depending on the specifics of your case, the abutment may have been placed at the same time as the implant, or a brief second procedure may be required at this stage. Either way, it is a straightforward appointment performed under local anesthesia.

After the abutment is secured, digital scans or traditional impressions of your mouth are taken and sent to a dental lab for crown fabrication. The crown is custom-designed to match the shape, size, and shade of your surrounding teeth.

Most labs return completed crowns within two to three weeks.

Final Crown Placement and Ongoing Care

When the permanent crown arrives, it is attached to the abutment and evaluated for proper fit, bite alignment, and appearance. Minor adjustments may be made before the restoration is finalized.

Once it is in place, the process is complete, and the tooth looks, functions, and feels like a natural part of your smile.

Caring for a dental implant long-term is no different from caring for your natural teeth. Brushing twice daily, flossing, and keeping up with routine professional cleanings are all that is required.

Our dental team may also recommend periodic X-rays to confirm that the bone surrounding the implant remains healthy over time. With consistent care, a well-integrated implant can remain stable and fully functional for many years.
